- American Indian Women in Higher Education: Is Tinto's Model Applicable?
- Author: Taylor, Franci Lynne'
- Date: 2005-05-15
- Program: Native American Studies
- Abstract: Higher education degree completion for American Indians has remained virtually unchanged for the past three decades. American Indians, both female and male, continue to have the lowest percentage of terminal degrees completion of any ethnic population in the United States. Numerous studies have been completed to examine the barriers that prohibit American Indian success at the postsecondary level. However, there remains a lack of critical information concerning the personal experiences of those American Indian females who have persevered and have completed first, an undergraduate degree and th...

- Apathy
- Author: Dinkins, Jonathan
- Date: 2005-05-15
- Program: Fine Arts
- Abstract: In this show, I'm commenting on the apathetic attitudes of our society that I find appalling. Our culture has become a thoughtless throw-away society with an unhealthy consumer drive. We are fixated on fast-everything along with its 'disposable' packaging. The willing and un-willing deterioration of the environment; seen through thoughtless (inhumane) killing for pleasure, unmanaged pest-control, littering, oil spills, and the desire to drill in refuge areas (ANWAR and East Front Glacier National Park); has created a consumer culture that relies on ignorance to excuse itself from environmen...

- Assessing Constructed Wetlands for Beneficial Use of Saline-Sodic Water
- Author: Kirkpatrick, Amber Denise
- Date: 2005-05-15
- Program: Land Resources and Environmental Sciences
- Abstract: Changes in agricultural practices, and irrigation strategies combined with natural processes, have led to increased salinization of soil and water resources worldwide. Coal bed methane (CBM) development in the Powder River Basin of Montana and Wyoming results in the co-production of large volumes of sodic and moderately saline discharge water, and represents a potential source of salinization of soil and water resources. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of constructed wetlands as a tool for CBM product water management. This was accomplished by assessing seasonal water...

- An Assessment of Culverts of Fish Passage Barriers in a Montana Drainage using a Multi-Tiered Approach
- Author: Burford Jr., Duncan Drake
- Date: 2005-05-15
- Program: Fish and Wildlife Management
- Abstract: Restriction or blockage of fish movement due to culverts may have important consequences to fish populations. Problems include the direct loss of critical upstream habitats, and the loss of connectivity with neighboring populations; however, culvert barriers may also serve to protect native species from nonnative species encroachment. Culverts can impede fish movement due to high water velocities, inadequate water depths, and excessive outfall heights among other factors. Most previous studies have focused on fish passage at only a few culverts and thus the extent to which culverts impede fish...

- Behavioral Consequences of Calcium/Calmodulin Kinase II Inhibition in Rats
- Author: Schwartz, Elizabeth Ann
- Date: 2005-05-15
- Program: Applied Psychology
- Abstract: CaM kinase II (CaMKII) comprises 2% of hippocampal protein and plays an important role in learning and models of neural plasticity. Previous studies have employed a variety of techniques to inhibit CaMKII to investigate its role. This includes the use of chemical inhibition, genetic mutation and antisense; all have shown limitations. In the present study, RNA interference (RNAi) was used to inhibit CaMKII in the hippocampus of rats. The goal of this project was to determine if inhibition of hippocampal CaM kinase would result in behavioral deficits consistent with the role of this kinase. Thre...

- Borrowing Modernity: A Comparison of Educational Change in Japan, China, and Thailand from the Early Seventeenth to the Mid-Twentieth Century
- Author: Batchelor, Randal Shon
- Date: 2005-05-15
- Program: Education
- Abstract: In the pre-modern era, the Japanese, Chinese and Siamese sustained sophisticated educational systems that buttressed complex political, social, and cultural institutions. In the nineteenth century, the rise of Western imperialism threatened the survivals of all three realms. Unlike their East Asian neighbors, Japan, China, and Siam preserved a large measure of self-rule though they had to cede significant amounts of sovereignty. To defend their societies's interests, their leaders sought to modernize their political, social, and economic structures. In the process, they abandoned existing edu...

- Building a Partnership Between Nature and Human Culture in Natural History Film
- Author: Hillman, Paul Bishop
- Date: 2005-05-15
- Program: Science and Natural History Filmmaking
- Abstract: The term "nature" can be defined in a variety of ways supporting very different views on how humans should interact with the natural world. The ambiguity inherent in the definition of nature promotes a variety of different applications for the concept of nature, particularly in relation to natural history films. Many natural history films aim to promote awareness and respect for the natural world. The majority of current nature documentaries, however, seem to define nature as an object and employ techniques that actually perpetuate a harmful dichotomy between nature and human cultu...

- Burdens and Blessings: Heuristic Pedagogy for the Rhetorical Endeavor in Composition
- Author: Lenart, Joshua Bela
- Date: 2005-05-15
- Program: English
- Abstract: Rhetoric has been a cornerstone of Western thought for at least the last 2500 years, whether disdained as manipulative techniques exercised by immoral lawyers and corrupt politicians or prized as an elegant mastery of language displayed by leaders and dignitaries. This essay posits that rhetoric is always a fundamental part not only of Western but of all societies. Maintaining such a constitution necessarily raises the questions how and why should educators acknowledge rhetoric's role in their instruction. Of the innumerable sites for introducing an increased focus on rhetorical instruction i...

- Changing Soil Degradation Trends in Senegal with Carbon Sequestration Payments
- Author: Gray, Kara Michelle
- Date: 2005-05-15
- Program: Applied Economics
- Abstract: In Sudo-Sahelian Africa, erosion and nutrient mining are prominent causes of soil degradation. In Senegal, harvesting grains and crop residue from the land impact heavily on soil carbon content, while the insufficient replacement of soil nutrients with fertilizers contributes to negative nutrient balances. Given the economic perspective of the rational farmer and the dynamic nature of crop and soil management issues, this thesis used a regional case study in the Groundnut Basin of Senegal to do the following: describe and assess economic incentives specific the to the case study region; model ...

- Demography of Lewis's Woodpecker, Breeding Bird Densities, and Riparian Aspen Integrity in a Grazed Landscape
- Author: Newlon, Karen Rachel
- Date: 2005-05-15
- Program: Biological Sciences
- Abstract: Aspen (Populus tremuloides) riparian woodlands are extremely limited in distribution throughout the western U.S., yet these habitats have a disproportionate value to breeding birds. Aspen habitats are also considered prime sheep and cattle summer range, particularly in the semiarid Intermountain West. Such concentrated use has raised concern about the effects of sheep and cattle grazing on these habitats. We examined the influences of sheep and cattle grazing on aspen riparian woodlands and the associated breeding bird community. We had two objectives: 1) to determine how habitats grazed by sh...

- Determinants of Seller Choice between Auction and Negotiation: An Empirical Application to Cattle Markets
- Author: Swanser, Kole
- Date: 2005-05-15
- Program: Applied Economics
- Abstract: Persistent diversity of selling mechanisms is well known to economists, but not well understood. A very interesting (but also very difficult) question of what determines seller choice between mechanisms has received relatively little attention in economic literature. I extend the applied empirical research in this area by quantifying factors that influence whether livestock producers choose to sell cattle using auctions and negotiated sales. Two major factors identified from the existing literature are expected to influence choice of selling method for cattle: 1) relative selling costs of each...

- An Ecofeminist Model for Wildlife Film
- Author: Graziano, Tracy Ann
- Date: 2005-05-15
- Program: Science and Natural History Filmmaking
- Abstract: The most dominant form of wildlife film for broadcast currently upholds a dangerous separation between culture and nature with production practices, editing and film subtext. If wildlife films are to change and incorporate science, they must also relate that science to other discourses to present the subject's greater reality. Wildlife films have a duty to represent their subject fairly, and in that fairness propose a preservation ethic that will serve for many as a stepping-stone to environmental salvation. A look into ecofeminist discourse provides a new methodology for producing wildlife fi...

- The Effect of Divorce Risk on the Labor Force Participation of Women With and Without Children
- Author: Genadek, Katie Rose
- Date: 2005-05-15
- Program: Applied Economics
- Abstract: This paper examines the effects of divorce risk on the labor force participation responses of married women. The empirical analysis uses a difference-in-difference-in-difference estimator to compare changes in labor force participation associated with the passage of state-level divorce laws, focusing on the responses of married women with children relative to married women without children. The most important new finding is that married mothers have greater labor force participation responses to no-fault divorce laws than do married non-mothers in states with such laws, even after controlling ...

- Evaluating and Monitoring Invasive Plant Processes
- Author: Repath, Charles Fitts
- Date: 2005-05-15
- Program: Land Resources and Environmental Sciences
- Abstract: Non-indigenous plant species (NIS) are a concern for both natural area land managers and the public. These species are perceived negatively despite the fact that the processes and impacts related to NIS are not fully understood. Also, control is generally conducted without understanding NIS population ecology. As a result, few NIS populations have been successfully controlled. We studied the population ecology of NIS in natural areas. First, Linaria vulgaris was monitored at different spatial scales over three years to determine its invasiveness, and also to determine which life history states...
