Upper Extremity Kinematics and Joint Coordination of Fly-Casting
Author: Allen, Joshua Ryan
Date: 2006-08-15
Program: Health and Human Development
Abstract: Little research exists that focuses on the motions and coordination common to fly-casting. It was hypothesized that kinematic parameters of casting (peak and total range of motion, timing of peak joint angular velocity, and magnitude of peak joint angular velocity) would increase in order to cast lines of greater length. Also, it was hypothesized that when greater length of line is cast, the time between peak angular velocities would decrease. The purpose of this study was to determine the kinematic and joint coordination changes necessary to cast lines of different length. Eighteen male subje...

Strange Bedfellows: Science and Storytelling for Broadcast Television
Author: Bell, Andrew Wade
Date: 2006-08-15
Program: Science and Natural History Filmmaking
Abstract: Filmmakers exploring natural science subject matter that want to sell their work to broadcast television or theatrical outlets face a difficult challenge. They must somehow conflate two contradictory elements: natural science information and compelling storytelling. Looking at the roots of classical narrative, we can better understand why audiences have come to crave it. Broadcast television, in turn, caters to audience desire. This combination forces filmmakers to present natural science information in an exciting way, and has led filmmakers to employ time-honored narrative structures as orga...

A Validation Study of the Montana State University In-Plane Loader
Author: Collett, Aaron Bruce
Date: 2006-08-15
Program: Mechanical Engineering
Abstract: Characterizing a polymer composite material's response to loading beyond the elastic region is less well defined than it is for other structural materials such as metals. The Naval Research Laboratory has developed a method that uses dissipated energy as a metric to facilitate this characterization. The method relies on empirical data from material strength tests as well as finite element analysis data to make the prediction. A substantial amount of empirical data from different loading conditions is needed to characterize a material. This warrants a testing machine that can apply several load...

Analysis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Virulence in Modeled Microgravity Conditions
Author: Guadarrama-Beltran, Seratna
Date: 2006-08-15
Program: Microbiology
Abstract: Spaceflight conditions may enhance bacterial growth, alter antimicrobial susceptibility and possibly affect virulence. Since spaceflight causes astronauts to experience secondary immunosuppression, increased virulence would increase the risk of infection. Limited opportunities for spaceflight experiments necessitate ground-based simulations. Clinostats and rotating wall vessel bioreactors, e.g. High Aspect Ratio Vessels (HARVs) are used to simulate microgravity effects at 1xg. Clinostat and HARV rotation on the horizontal axis results in the g-vector being time averaged to near zero. In contro...

Clarkia: Genetic Basis of Sister Species Divergence Clarkia concinna x Clarkia breweri
Author: Henry, Amanda Ann (Shaffer)
Date: 2006-08-15
Program: Plant Sciences
Abstract: The genetic changes accompanying speciation provide insight into the mode and tempo of phenotypic divergence. A genetic linkage map of Clarkia was used to investigate the genetic basis of several morphological differences between two closely related plant taxa with divergent pollination syndromes, C. concinna and C. breweri. The genetic linkage map of the hybrid genome contained 40 markers on 11 linkage groups. In this study, the genetics of eight floral and vegetative traits were analyzed in a segregating C. concinna x C. breweri F2 population (N=95) and in replicates of the parentals, F1 hyb...

Static and Dynamic Behavior of Stress Coated Membranes
Author: Nandurkar, Kuldeep Pandurang
Date: 2006-08-15
Program: Mechanical Engineering
Abstract: Large space mirrors need to be made of ultra-lightweight materials (membranes) that have very low densities and high flexibility (compliance) for packaging. A coating application necessary for optical reflectivity may also impart to these ultra-lightweight materials a desired shape and to help maintain that shape in the harsh environment of space. When a coating is applied on the membrane substrate, stresses develop in the coating due to atomistic processes. These stresses are fundamental to the final shape of the substrate. Coatings applied to the substrate in order to maintain a particular s...

Common Loon Nesting Ecology in Northwest Montana
Author: Paugh, Justin Isaac
Date: 2006-08-15
Program: Fish and Wildlife Management
Abstract: Common Loons (Gavia immer) are found across the northern continental United States and in Canada and Alaska. The common loon is long lived, with delayed breeding maturity and low fecundity. Surveys indicate Montana's Common Loon population remains stable, but lakeshore development and watercraft recreation are increasing. While the effects of these changes are unclear, research investigating reproductive success over a gradient of habitat conditions, at multiple spatial scales is lacking. The objectives of this research were to investigate vital rates and the relationships between daily nest s...

Protein Cage Architectures as a Nano-Platform for Material Synthesis and Metal Binding
Author: Allen, Mark Andrew
Date: 2006-08-15
Program: Chemistry
Abstract: Supramolecular proteins that assemble into cage like architectures have been used for nano-material synthesis and as a scaffold for metal binding. Material synthesis can be performed by exploiting the cage-like properties of these nano-containers and relying on the electrostatically distinct interior environment that drive mineral encapsulation. Ferritin and ferritin like proteins can be used as size constrained reaction vessels that encapsulate materials that have sizes that are determined by the internal dimensions of the protein cage. These range from 5 nm for the ferritin like protein from...

A Matter of Life and Death: Rethinking Evolution and the Nature of Science on Television
Author: Bard, Susanne Clara
Date: 2006-08-15
Program: Science and Natural History Filmmaking
Abstract: In a world where antibiotic resistance can make bacterial infections deadly and the HIV virus constantly mutates inside the human body, an understanding of evolution and its mechanisms is increasingly important. Yet much of the public is still either hostile to or misunderstands evolution and its mechanisms. Television provides the bulk of the general public's exposure to science once formal education has ended. The rhetorical strategies employed by much of science and evolution programming, along with an emphasis on content over process, delivers the message that science is a search for absol...

Spatio-Temporal Dynamics of the Central Bison Herd in Yellowstone National Park
Author: Bruggeman, Jason Edward
Date: 2006-08-15
Program: Fish and Wildlife Biology
Abstract: The spatio-temporal dynamics of Yellowstone National Park bison (Bison bison) are complex and affected by multiple abiotic and biotic mechanisms. In the Madison- Firehole area, which provides winter range for the migratory central herd, this suite of effects is particularly intricate owing to geothermally influenced habitats, severe winter climate, and variability in resource distribution. Understanding factors influencing bison spatio-temporal dynamics is of importance to Yellowstone, which is faced with managing a growing bison population that is expanding its range. I gathered data from 199...

An Educational Ethnography of Teacher Developed Science Curriculum Implementation: Enacting Conceptual Change Based Science Inquiry with Hispanic Students
Author: Brunsell, Eric Steven
Date: 2006-08-15
Program: Education
Abstract: An achievement gap exists between White and Hispanic students in the United States. Research has shown that improving the quality of instruction for minority students is an effective way to narrow this gap. Science education reform movements emphasize that science should be taught using a science inquiry approach. Extensive research in teaching and learning science also shows that a conceptual change model of teaching is effective in helping students learn science. Finally, research into how Hispanic students learn best has provided a number of suggestions for science instruction. The Inquiry ...

Creating Space for Science and Celebrity in the Public Discussion of Climate Change
Author: DeWitt, Sarah Louise
Date: 2006-08-15
Program: Science and Natural History Filmmaking
Abstract: Climate change is one of the most prominent topics in news, politics, and popular culture today. For many years the topic has been presented as an unresolved debate between believers and skeptics, leading to a perpetual state of confusion and helplessness in the public eye. In the past eight months newspapers and magazines have begun to suggest that the climate change debate is over. The scientific consensus agrees that climate change is happening and it is the result of human influence on the Earth's atmosphere. Yet this consensus has not effectively translated into the public consciousness. ...

Frequency Stabilization of an External Cavity Diode Laser Employing Digital Control
Author: Drollinger, Cy Taylor
Date: 2006-08-15
Program: Electrical Engineering
Abstract: Optical signal processing can span across bandwidths of hundreds of GHz with resolutions in the kHz range. This can be done by using spectral hole burning materials. A limiting factor in the frequency resolution is the bandwidth of the laser driving the spectral hole burning material. Better control techniques of laser jitter will decrease laser line width and increase frequency resolution of optical processing. This thesis explores the digital control technique of inherent noise in an external cavity diode laser and the use of reconfigurable platform to prototype digital implementation....

A Three Dimensional Finite Element Model of Biofilm Subjected to Fluid Flow and its Application to Predicting Detachment Potential
Author: Gammelgard, Peter Norman
Date: 2006-08-15
Program: Civil Engineering
Abstract: Microbial biofouling of wetted surfaces can adversely impact the hydrodynamic performance of pressurized conduits. These impacts are due, in part, to the viscoelastic material properties of biofilm. Of particular interest is the response of biofilm to changing hydrodynamic conditions and its effect on potential for biofilm removal. The goal of this research was two fold; 1) to develop a three dimensional numerical model, incorporating the viscoelastic material description of biofilm, to simulate the response of biofilm to varying hydrodynamic conditions and 2) use this model to identify behavi...

Generic Properties of the Infinite Population Genetic Algorithm
Author: Hayes, Christina Savannah Maria
Date: 2006-08-15
Program: Mathematics
Abstract: The infinite population model for the genetic algorithm, where the iteration of the genetic algorithm corresponds to an iteration of a map G, is a discrete dynamical system. The map G is a composition of a selection operator and a mixing operator, where the latter models the effects of both mutation and crossover. This dissertation examines the finiteness and hyperbolicity of fixed points of this model. For a typical mixing operator, the fixed point set of G is finite and all fixed points are hyperbolic....

Evaluation of a Web-Based Tool for Ungulate Harvest Management
Author: Kenyon, Jr., Marc Wayne
Date: 2006-08-15
Program: Animal and Range Sciences
Abstract: Hunting the female segment of a wild ungulate population is an effective wildlife management tool to control overpopulation. Most hunters prefer to harvest males however, limiting success in controlling overpopulation. Landowners attempting to manage wild ungulate overpopulation have expressed difficulty with finding hunters who wish to harvest female ungulates. Likewise, some hunters willing to harvest female ungulates have difficulty locating private landowners seeking hunters. The Montana State University Wildlife Extension Program created the DoeCowHunt website to help remedy this situatio...

Author: Morgan, Joel Ryan
Date: 2006-08-15
Program: Chemistry
Abstract: Glycodendrimers were synthesized for studies in carbohydrate-protein interactions, and from these studies we gained insight into the mechanism of some carbohydrate-protein interactions. First, the synthesis of tris-mannose cluster functionalized glycodendrimers of different sizes using a "click chemistry" approach is described. The macromolecules were characterized using 1H and 13C NMR and MALDITOF MS. Next, a heterogeneous dendrimer functionalization strategy to control the presentation of the carbohydrate clusters around the dendrimer periphery is reported. Nacetyl galactosamine an...
