- Technology: Pursuing the Dialectical Image
- Author: van den Bosch, Craig David
- Date: 2007-05-15
- Program: Fine Arts
- Abstract: I first typed the words utopian image into Google... started finding the term dialectic associated with them, then dialectical, then I typed in utopian image dialectical...then I found walter Benjamin and the dialectical image. This was how I acquired the title for my show. It just seemed to fit what I was trying to coalesce in my mind. After having researched various aspects of technology and how it has affected the body and will continue to do so today and into the future, I tried to find a central theme. I tried to pinpoint the root of our exponential technological pursuit. It occurred to m...

- Literary theory, the novel and science media
- Author: Goodyer, Meigan Gates
- Date: 2008-05-15
- Program: Science and Natural History Filmmaking
- Abstract: In this paper, the author calls on filmmakers to view science as culturally constructed, and science media as an art form with a specific raison d'être: to explore the culture of science. The purpose of these explorations is to destabilize science's unquestioned hegemony and to reveal new insights on human nature. Literary theory, particularly as it relates to the novel, is shown as a tool for deconstructing and critiquing current science and science media. Defining characteristics of the novel are discussed and offered as the basis for a new model of science media. It is hoped that...

- Secular spiritual nature films: their use, misuse, and potential promise as roving biospheres
- Author: Beck, Jefferson Andrews
- Date: 2009-05-15
- Program: Science and Natural History Filmmaking
- Abstract: The central purpose of poetic techniques in nature films remains under-analyzed and the realm of spiritual motivations in filmic techniques under-explored. In this paper I examine historical and recent attitudes toward nature and the spiritual, highlighting in particular the work of Existentialists, and use those contexts to critique several broad categories of nature films. I find that all types of nature films, to varying degrees, contain a poetic impulse and often a secular spiritual motivation. I conclude that nature films, when carefully crafted, can be highly imperfect, yet highly potent...

- An Assesment of Historic and Contemporary Models of Native Representation from Ethno-Entertainment Films to Experiential Education Films
- Author: Chaikin, Eric Justin
- Date: 2006-05-15
- Program: Science and Natural History Filmmaking
- Abstract: Ethno-entertainment is a term that makes apparent the merger of entertainment and science in the depiction of the Native presence in film. This approach to filmmaking is assessed and is determined to be defunct. Experiential-education filmmaking is offered as an alternative approach. It is suggested that Native science can inform this approach in a way that allows a contextual understanding of Native language and culture. My video thesis work, K'anecho'xdekdiigh- I'm Not Going to Teach You, is suggested as an example of how the prominence of Native science may promote survivance rather than pe...

- Your Worst Nightmare--An Indian with a Book: Literary Empowerment for Native American Students in the Educational System
- Author: McFadden, Erica Lynn
- Date: 2005-05-15
- Program: Native American Studies
- Abstract: Native American rates of graduation are extremely low in comparison to the rest of the United States public and the classes which are considered "assimilative" classes have among the worst success rates for Native American students. Among these assimilative classes is the field of literature. This thesis explores how literature is assimilative and progresses through how it can be empowering for students. The thesis discusses the importance of incorporating Native American worldviews into the literary classroom and provides specific suggestions for teaching literature to Native Americ...

- A Critique of the Portrayal of Grizzly Bears in Contemporary Natural History Films
- Author: Shier, John walter
- Date: 2005-12-15
- Program: Science and Natural History Filmmaking
- Abstract: Natural History films and television programs are based on the perception that the grizzly bear is an animal that only lives, that only belongs in wilderness. These films and programs spread and strengthen this perception among audiences, compelling them to relegate grizzlies to the few parcels of land that still meet our society's definition of wilderness. The perception ensures that the grizzly's long-term survival in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is threatened; the regions wilderness areas simply don't provide enough habitat for the bears and many people are unwilling to tolerate the pr...

- Connections: making sense of the world around us (the use of music in documentary films)
- Author: Glover, Kristin Lynn
- Date: 2009-08-15
- Program: Science and Natural History Filmmaking
- Abstract: Music is often a neglected and undervalued element in documentary films. This thesis looks at music cognition, film cognition, and learning theory to argue for the importance of music in documentary films. Adhering to the theory that the documentary film genre is an educational tool first and foremost, the use of music strengthens a film's potential to engage with and educate an audience. The first portion of this thesis examines brain function as it pertains to music and learning, as well as research in narrative film cognition, looking particularly at how documentary films provide a unique m...

- The Romantic Genius of Einstein and the Science Essay Film
- Author: Radcliff, Matthew Robert
- Date: 2006-12-15
- Program: Science and Natural History Filmmaking
- Abstract: The image of Einstein as a scientific genius, a talent so elevated it can spill over the boundaries between science and art, requires the assumption that art and science are not simply different fields of knowledge, but are polar opposites. Despite two centuries of effort, the debate on the relationship of art and science is far from resolved; the notion that they are exclusive of each other is even less established. However, there remains a tendency to treat art and science as the two extremes of a linear scale of talent. Only an exceptional person, therefore, can straddle the line between th...

- The Rainbow Across the Boundaries: A Study of Leslie Marmon Silko's Ceremony
- Author: Idei, Yasuko Iseri
- Date: 2004-12-15
- Program: Native American Studies
- Abstract: In order to fully understand contemporary Native American literature like the works written by Leslie Marmon Silko, one must have a sufficient knowledge of the Native American worldviews expressed in their oral stories that have been handed down for unremembered generations. The study has to include what the oral tradition has meant to the indigenous people and their communities, how it has been kept and passed down, and what it can do to the tribal peoples for securing their identity and power to cope with contemporary issues. Indigenous people have different worldviews from other culture gro...

- Now and all are important: a post-structural critique of humanism, Aldo Leopold's The Land Ethic and Disney/Pixar's Wall-E
- Author: Dye, Charles Eugene
- Date: 2008-12-15
- Program: Science and Natural History Filmmaking
- Abstract: Feelings of hopelessness and meaninglessness have become hallmarks of American society. As a filmmaker and film educator it is clear I share a responsibility to address these defining issues. Using some of the ideas of Zygmunt Bauman, Jacques Derrida, Neil Evernden, Claude Levi-Strauss, Bill Nichols, Nell Noddings, José Ortega y Gasset, Edward Said, and Erwin Straus, I observe this problem to be a result of dispassionate humanism -a machineworld story considered appropriate in the current social construction. From this critical perspective, I then analyze Aldo Leopold's "The La...

- AnOther Language
- Author: Ronan, Carah Dawn
- Date: 2007-12-15
- Program: Science and Natural History Filmmaking
- Abstract: Through revisionist anthropology, postcolonial theories and feminist theories, an alternative language in film can come to light. The analysis of spoken words in film calls attention to the use of language as a cinematic tool. Las Hurdes uses narration to construct a fictionalized society presented within the context of a documentary. This unconventional approach encourages viewers to view films more skeptically, while Everest: Beyond the Limits, reinforces the dominant ideologies of the west. Films without spoken words also call attention to the use of language that is conveyed to viewers in ...

- We are still talking the wrong language to 'tv babies'
- Author: Pieczenik, Sharon Rovner
- Date: 2008-05-15
- Program: Science and Natural History Filmmaking
- Abstract: In order to reach a young generation diagnosed with "nature deficit disorder" and flooded with mass media messages from a myriad of channels, non governmental organizations (NGOs) and environmental educators need to embrace musical videos as a tool for conservation education. Rare Conservation is one NGO that utilizes music videos as an innovative technique to reach a younger audience in order to foster a sense of pride and concern for the environment in which they live. In 1992, RARE Conservation produced a music video for the song "Quincy Rap" by Tony (The Obeah Man) ...

- Spin-Label Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Characterization of Heterogeneously Functionalized Dendrimers
- Author: walter, Eric Dale
- Date: 2004-05-15
- Program: Chemistry
- Abstract: Dendrimers are roughly spherical macromolecular polymers that can provide a molecular framework for the attachment of various functionalities. The range of application can be vastly expanded when attached with a heterogeneous mix of functionalities tailored to meet a specific need. The effective application requires the acquisition of several new techniques. First, chemical control of the average ratio of functional groups and analytical methods to determine the ratio. Secondly, a determination of the distribution of ratios. And finally, a method whereby the spatial distribution is determined....

- The private lives of scientists: revealing the human-side of science film
- Author: Misztal, Stefanie Snioszek
- Date: 2008-08-15
- Program: Science and Natural History Filmmaking
- Abstract: As a genre, science films have routinely dehumanized the scientists who appear in them, portraying these characters as simple, one-dimensional encyclopedias of knowledge, whose sole purpose is to relay facts and provide expert testimony in support of the filmmaker's agenda. These films fall short of their true potential when they neglect to present their subjects as complex, multidimensional human beings with fascinating stories, opinions, tragedies and comedies to share about their lives. As science filmmakers we should attempt to re-humanize the way science is portrayed on film by looking t...

- Individualizing the Writing Process through a Genre-Based, Social-Process Pedagogy
- Author: Wilke, William walter
- Date: 2006-05-15
- Program: English
- Abstract: Many contemporary composition scholars are moving beyond process theory, contending that the act of writing effectively is one of complex social interaction, an intricate ballet of intellectual feigns, parries and thrusts, that cannot be reduced to the simple process of prewriting, writing and rewriting to be taught in the same, or even similar, manner to every person. In fact, they argue, there can be no effective classroom composition pedagogy that reveals the social nature of the act of writing to the student in any meaningful way. And yet a wealth of personal observations have shown that a...

- American Indian Women in Higher Education: Is Tinto's Model Applicable?
- Author: Taylor, Franci Lynne'
- Date: 2005-05-15
- Program: Native American Studies
- Abstract: Higher education degree completion for American Indians has remained virtually unchanged for the past three decades. American Indians, both female and male, continue to have the lowest percentage of terminal degrees completion of any ethnic population in the United States. Numerous studies have been completed to examine the barriers that prohibit American Indian success at the postsecondary level. However, there remains a lack of critical information concerning the personal experiences of those American Indian females who have persevered and have completed first, an undergraduate degree and th...

- The Impact of Wolves on the Market for Elk Hunting in Montana: Hunter Adjustment and Game Agency Response
- Author: Batastini, John walter
- Date: 2005-08-15
- Program: Applied Economics
- Abstract: The gray wolf has become a symbol of controversy in the American West. Hunters, however, are one group that has diverse attitudes toward wolf recovery stemming from the conflicting impacts the presence of wolves creates. Impacts on hunters and big-game populations also affect state game agencies. As of 2005, wolves are still managed by the federal government, so the impact of wolves is exogenous to state game agencies. However, state game agencies can exert control over how wolves affect hunters by adjusting management of big-game hunting. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a method to a...

- Application of Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometry to Measure Hydrocarbon Emissions in Engine Exhaust
- Author: Rogers, Todd Michael
- Date: 2007-08-15
- Program: Chemistry
- Abstract: Megacities around the world face air quality problems due to exhaust emissions from large vehicle fleets. Chemical reactions involving volatile organic compounds (VOC) from automobile exhaust are known to produce ground level ozone which poses a threat to human health and plant life. Additionally, some of these organic compounds are known carcinogens. While the dangers of VOC are well known, their production from in use vehicles and aircraft are relatively poorly understood. This dissertation will describe how a Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometer (PTR-MS) was altered to make the first ...
